Chapter 01
Ottar Stangeland, born 1980 and already known as "The Fat Animal", fronted the Stavanger Oi!/punk band Haggis — a group the regional music archive Rogalyd records as notorious for raw energy and controversial appearances in Norway and abroad.
Pictured: the poster for the Haggis thirty-year anniversary show. It is reproduced here as an archive document — the date, ticket price and stage times printed on it belong to that night, not to any upcoming one.
Chapter 02
Stangeland began writing country songs while serving a 90-day prison sentence. It is not promotional colour. Punk articulates confrontation in the present tense; country narrates the consequences afterwards. The form changed because what he needed to say had changed.
Chapter 03
Released by CCAP in 2012. Nine tracks built on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, dobro, pedal steel, upright bass and twanging guitars, with contributions from fiddler Pete Johansen and Helldorado guitarist Dag Vagle placing the record inside an existing Rogaland roots-rock network.
Reception was favourable but not uncritical, and pointed toward regional cult status rather than breakthrough — an album respected because an improbable genre shift was executed with real craft.
Chapter 04
Eight years separate the debut from the next release. The public record does not explain the gap, and this archive does not invent one.
Chapter 05
2020, on the metal-associated Soulseller Records. Recorded, engineered and mixed by Hans Ole Kristiansen at Studio 11Q. The lineup was presented as Mr. Strangeland, Mr. Harmer and Mr. Stedjeberg — the semi-fictional outlaw identities kept intact.
Critics reached for "gloomy Americana" rather than country. The arrangements open space around the voice, and grief and fatigue register in it.
Chapter 06
Deathbarrel circulate in metal spaces without playing metal — including Oslo's Inferno Festival in 2024. The appeal is to listeners who value darkness and transgression without requiring distorted guitars as proof.
Chapter 07
The stage names are part of the work. The band's early manifesto caricatured Norwegian outlaw country as the product of "Old Norse berserker genes", wrenches, motor oil and Saturday-night beer — and the catalogue then complicates that swagger with vulnerability.
Member profiles are published only once the band approves the names, roles and photographs. Nothing here is guessed.
